January 2012
Wishing you a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year
The arrival of a new year provides many opportunities for us to make changes, to make resolutions, to make a difference. What are you planning on doing this new year of 2012. If you were a Mayan, this would be the final year of your calendar. That doesn't sound promising! If you're a presidential hopeful, you are looking forward to victory in November. But politics is one of the three topics one never should discuss. So, let's talk glass. Let's talk about the state of glass -- much like a mayor, a governor, or president talks about the state of his domain.
Boyd Glass has enjoyed thirty-three years of glassmaking -- sharing the craft between generations, sharing glassmaking secrets between father and son and grandson. Not many families have had a similar opportunity and we are grateful we have had the chance to experiment together. We are most grateful, though, for those of you who collect, buy and sell Boyd Glass. We don't have to look far to find other manufacturing plants -- glass in particular -- that shuttered their doors or opted to outsource the manufacturing abroad. Although some collectors have moved on, new collectors delight in discovering that special glass figurine that fills the bill when looking for a unique gift. The World Wide Web assists us in spreading the news about our glassware. While we still make glass by hand, our kiln is computerized to temper the glass. Technology sweeps across manufacturing, but not at Boyd glass. The chemicals are painstakingly measured and "thrown" into the old-fashioned gas-heated tank...by hand. So many visitors have commented how satisfying it must be to use your hands in creating an object. We can point to the glassware that catches the afternoon's sunrays. How do you measure that worth?
We measure that worth in the loyal supporters of our endeavor. We encourage you to continue collecting for yourself but also to jump-start a younger collector with a few special pieces this new year.
Boyd Glass will begin 2012 making Vaseline. This popular clear yellow glass will fluoresce under a black light. We will make many of our signature series salts in this color.
We recently added a few old pieces of Rubina to our sub-category: Old Boyd. We made Rubina in 1979 and again in 1988. Making this color again will be difficult due to the limited supply of one of the chemicals - Lepidiolite. Currently shown on our website in Rubina is 5” Lamb, a Fuzzy the bear, a Kitten on the Pillow (this mould is now the Miss Cotton), and Little Joe the horse.
Barbara Newton continues to add the hand-painted touch to our glass. In our recent colors, items that she has handpainted are a Chick Salt in Cobaline Green Satin with white flowers, a Chick Salt in Cobaline Satin HP with pink flowers and Scottie Salt in Limelight Satin with a rose. Each of these special salts is $15.00 each.
We were off the week between Christmas Day and New Years Day and will be back pressing glass on January 2nd. It is nice to enjoy time off to spend with family and friends over the holidays.
