Grateful for 33 Years of Success
Part of American artistry dies when a glass factory closes. In a November 29. 2011, Washinton Post newspaper article another century-old glass factory closed when Steuben Glass ceased making glass. Bernard and Sue Boyd have seen their share of glass factories go out-of-business during their 33 years owning Boyd Glass. Glassmaking is America's oldest industry dating back to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Boyd Glass is still making glass in southeastern Ohio with a man and a mould. A November 17, 2011, New York Times newspaper article quotes Bill Miller, the long time manager of Legg Mason Value Trust. Mr. Miller said, “….success equals survival. If you have survived, you will have succeeded.” Although referencing the mutual fund industry, this quote can easily apply to any industry or business.
At Boyd Glass, we are making Vaseline glass. We are not saying we were all overjoyed to finally be making Vaseline, but Sue did bring in Kennedy’s doughnuts that morning.
We finished making Limelight, the light clear green glass, with the following moulds since the last newsletter:
| Turkey Salt | Bunny Salt | Duck Salt | Zack elephant |
| Elephant Head TP | Bull Dog's Head | Dog's Head | Charlie Scottie dog |
| Sammy squirrel | Louise Bell | Tractor | Bird Salt |
| 3" Hen | Sportscar | Scottie Salt | Chick Salt |
| Mini Insulator | Freddie clown | 5" Hen | 5" Turkey |
| Brian bunny | Patrick bear | Suee pig | Sly fox |
| Indian Head TP |
We further diluted the crystalline green glass and made a Light Limelight. In this color we made the following moulds:
| Forget Me Not TP | Beaded Oval TP | Gypsy Pot | Pooche |
| 3" Swan |
We slagged Limelight with white glass calling it Limelight Slag. In this color we made the following:
| Chick Salt | Scottie Salt | Bunny Salt | Turkey Salt |
| Lamb Salt | Duck Salt |
We continue to add items to our website in our latest sub-category: Old Boyd. We recently added several items in the color Cashmere Pink – Bunny Salt, Chick Salt, Duck Salt, Grape Cardholder, Jeremy frog, Jewel Box and Lamb Salt. We also have several Salt and Pepper shakers shown (which may come with a tray) – Fantasia Blue, Heather, Orange Spice, and Waterloo. Also unique is a colonial couple- a Marguerite doll and a Colonial Man in Orange Spice.
The availability of the special Christmas handpainted items seems to vary daily. It is best to check the website or call us to see what might be currently in stock. Any item can be personalized with the name of a grandchild, favorite pet, special neighbor, etc. Give us some lead time and we should be able to accomplish this before the holidays.
Newsletter Special: Louise doll, Taxi, Tractor
The Louise doll normally sells for $16, but for this month, it will retail for $10.00. Named after Louise Boyd, we introduced the mould in the color Lemon Ice in 1979. We have the following Louise colors available: Apricot, English Yew, Heather, Pink Champagne, Violet Slate, and Willow Blue.
The Taxi normally sells for $14.00, but for this month, it will retail for $10.00. We introduced this mould in Alexandrite in 1993. In this clear, light blue-purple glass, we also sold it as a candy container. In the Taxi, we have the following colors: Avocado, Blue Violet, Cider, Limelight, Mirage, Siesta, Wheat, and White Salmon.
The Tractor normally sells for $12.00, but for this month, it will retail for $8.00. Bernard created the tractor because he wanted a collectible that boys could collect. We have the following colors of Tractor available: Blue Violet, Bluebell Slag, Cider, Coral Carnival, Limelight, Peach, Pearly Pink, Petal Pink, Siesta, and Spinnaker Blue.
We are planning on not pressing glass between Dec 22, 2011, and January 1, 2012. But the other times, if you are travelling “Over the River and through the woods” for the holidays, stop in to see us make glass. Bernard and Sue decided to stay home this year for the holidays.
For December, Boyd Glass will continue to offer free shipping on orders more than $50. This offer is for U.S. orders only and is also good for those who call us and do not like to order over the internet. This shipping deal will go away after the first of the year.
