September 2011
Foreign students to study family business
As you read this September 2011 newsletter, remember that September is Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month. Boyd Glass is still in Cobalt and should be completing the run of this popular clear dark blue in the next couple days. Our next planned glass color will be Vaseline; however, the transition from a dark blue to a light yellow is never a smooth one. So there probably will be an intermediate color, as we change colors.
Later this month, Boyd Glass will host a bus tour of MBA students from India. These students will enter their family businesses after graduation and want to learn more about inner workings of an American-family business. We can all agree that there are huge differences between the running of a family business and that of a widely held company. Dickens was not talking about family business, but it is applicable when he wrote, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” We hope our speech talking about THIS family run business does not push these graduate students “over the edge.”
With the recent cooler weather, we've been inclined to clean house and have unearthed some valuable older Boyd Glass. What a windfall for the collector looking for odd pieces during our first years. We invite collectors and dealers to go to the Boyd Glass website and look at the latest category: Old Boyd.
The new category on our website, Old Boyd seems to be a popular spot to look for odd items. Old Boyd is a new sub-category that we created under the category: Specialty. We will periodically add one-of-a-kind items here. Right now we have a Sleigh (yes, there is no snow on the ground in Ohio right now), a Tidbit Set and also a Children’s Lamb Set. Right now, we have an odd color Miss Cotton and many of these are basically one of one. We have found old train sets, 5” pieces, chick salts, bunny salts, turkey salts, bunny salts, etc.
Elephant Appreciation Day is September 22! Kids of all ages are captivated by elephants. Our elephant is named Zack, after Zachary Thomas Boyd. Zack was the first Boyd glassworker. He worked for 21 different glass factories including Imperial, Kemple, New Martinsville, Louie, Degenhart, etc. We have the following colors in Zack the elephant: Autumn Glow, Cider, Honeymoon, Ivory Blush, and White Salmon. These elephants sell for $20 each. We continue offer free shipping on orders over $50 for US destinations only.
Newsletter Specials: Candy carousel, Jeremy frog, Lil Angel
These three moulds are ones that Boyd Glass created. The first is a small carousel horse, Candy, which we introduced in February 1993. We were able to save some money with the introduction of the Candy mould, by not having a completely new mould made. The mould shop took the Little Joe the horse mould and turned it into a carousel horse! This month the Candy will sell for $5.00. We have the following colors of Candy carousel available: Cider, Coral, Honeycomb, Milk White, Mystique, Nile Green, Pale Orchid, Rosie Pink and Spring Glow.
Jeremy is a frog that Boyd Glass introduced in October 1992. Bernard thought of the name when he heard the first line “Jeremiah was a bullfrog” in the song “Joy to the World.” This month the Jeremy will sell for $6.00. We have the following colors of Jeremy frog available: Banana Cream, Bluebell Slag, Cider, Milk White, Pearly Pink, Spring Beauty, and White Salmon.
The most recently introduced of the three, Lil Angel. This mould is a small angel that Boyd Glass introduced in January 2002. This is a smaller version of our large Angel. This month the Lil Angel will sell for $6.00. We have the following colors of Lil Angel available: Blue Orchid, Cider, Cobalt, Cobalt Carnival, Cranberry, Honeycomb, Purple Valor Carnival, and Siesta.
