July 2011
Free shipping on order over $50
Happy 4th of July! And if you need another excuse to celebrate, July is also National Blueberry Month. The blueberry’s color is due to the plant pigment, anthocyanin. If we wanted to make a glass the color of blueberries we would use Cobalt oxide. Cobalt has many uses: in rechargeable batteries, “super alloys” in replacement hips and jet engines, and as a pigment. There are times in the glass business we are using cutting-edge technology. However, Cobalt has been used to color glass since the Bronze Age.
Barbara Newton hand-painted Cobalt Chicks and Sugar Dukes. The Chick Salt in Cobalt is in the signature series and is painted with red flowers. It sells for $15.00. Duke the Scottie dog in Sugar is painted with blue flowers and retails for $20.00. Charlie painted the feathers of the Cobalt Carnival Indian Head Toothpick. This colorful toothpick holder is very tedious to paint and sells for $15.00.
Sue was talking to one of our long-time collectors recently and the lady commented on how she appreciated that Boyd Glass still makes its own glass and how rare that is nowadays. Many companies have their products made overseas using cheap labor, with their trademark, then shipped back to the US to be sold in their American store. Boyd Glass still proudly places a label on a shipping box that says Made in the America. We will continue to make glass ourselves--the old fashioned way as long as collectors can appreciate our efforts.
On our website, we have a special offering of free shipping on orders more than $50. This offer is for domestic orders only. This offer is still good for those who call us and do not like to order off the internet. In January 2010, we offered free shipping on our old website. It took us awhile to figure out how to modify the current shopping cart, but it is in place. This is for shipping to US address only and there is a $50 minimum order.
Newsletter Specials: Boyd Special Train, Hazel koala bear, Tommy tiger
Twenty-six years ago, our original idea in the creation of the Boyd Special train was to present a train set with cars of various colors. But some people like certain colors and want all the cars the same color. We show nine colors of train sets on our website and may add other colors later. Many of these trains are in a color in which we only have one available. These trains come in their own box and will sell this month for $53.00. The colors of train available are Aloe, Alpine Blue, Autumn Glow, Crimson, Harvest Gold, Key Lime, Moss Green, Rosie Pink, and Sunkiste Carnival.
To celebrate National Zookeeper Week which is July 17-23, we thought we would have two popular zoo animals on special. On The American Association of Zoo Keepers website, http://aazk.org/national-zoo-keeper-week/ their pledge: As the need to protect and preserve our wildlife and vanishing habitats has increased, our role as educators and wildlife ambassadors has become essential. During the third week of July each year, celebrate National Zoo Keeper Week; both you and your animals deserve the recognition.
Our first zoo animal special is the koala bear and the second is the tiger. Both normally retail for $8.00, but for this month, they will sell for $5.00. Hazel the koala bear was introduced in March 2002 in the color Cobalt. We have the following colors of Hazel available: Blue Orchid, Blue Violet, Butternut, Cider, Cobalt, Coral Mist, Honeycomb, Honeymoon, Milk White, and Siesta.
Tommy the tiger was introduced in July 1994 in the color Milk Chocolate. We have the following colors of Tommy the tiger available: Aruba Slag, Blue Orchid, Cobalt, Columbia Green, Cranberry, Ivory Blush, Millennium Surprise, Purple Valor, and Toffee Slag.
